Teda International School’s secondary program begins with grade 7 and ends with grade 12. At times, the school will refer to grades 7 through 9 as lower secondary and grades 10 through 12 as upper secondary. Students in grades 7 through 9 are required to take five core academic subjects. These include math, science, English, history/geography, and Chinese language. Students will also take specialty classes in the areas of art, music, computers and physical education.
Upper secondary students in grades 10 through 12 take four core academic subjects. These include math, science, English, and history/geography. They may also choose from a number of elective offerings in the areas of visual arts, performing arts, technology, language, and/or athletics. In addition, upper secondary students may opt for advanced placement (AP) coursework. AP courses are university level courses that prepare students for an end-of-year exam. Students performing well on the end-of-year exam may earn university level credit thus reducing the time of study required to earn a university diploma.
Secondary students at TIS have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities in the areas of athletics, service, leadership, academics, and personal interest. Students participating in the extracurricular program have the opportunity to participate in learning activities that are difficult to replicate in the classroom. In addition, they have the opportunity to expand their network of friends by engaging with students who may share similar interests but come from various grade levels.
As students progress through the secondary grade levels, they will be given the opportunity to take greater ownership for their learning. Many teachers may begin to provide more choice so that students are free to pursue their interests and have more opportunity to explore topics at greater depth. Teachers may also be looking to guide a student’s program of study in such a way where his/her learning strengths can be exploited in a positive way.The TIS Secondary program (especially the upper secondary program) is focused on preparing students to enter and find success at the university level and therefore emphasizes skills in the areas of critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, research, and technology. In its short history, Teda International School has helped its graduates enter some of the most prestigious universities in the world including Rice University, the University of Illinois, University of California-Davis, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, McGill University, Qinghua University, and others.
